Mothers are our first example of real leadership. Mothers demonstrate the most important leadership skill, and that’s the ability to know what is most important. Mothers concern themselves with doing the right thing - not always doing things right.
Mothers are great leaders. They are concerned with efficiency and effectiveness. If they weren’t, can you image the state of the household? Mothers learn quickly to prioritize, which means they have to separate what is important from what isn’t. Once they’ve determined what is important, they then put their energy into what is essential.
Here’s what makes mothers the next generation of great leaders:
New Information Welcome. Mothers are constantly processing new information, which requires them to respond differently. They realize that priorities may change, which means they need to be flexible. A sick child is more important than dusting the house, making the budget work is more important than hiring the next administrative assistant, right at that moment.
Clear Communication Expected. Mothers don’t tolerate vague communication that is meant to confuse or blur. Remember how you used to give as little information as possible to get your way? Well, the savvy mother doesn’t fall for it. She knows exactly the right questions to ask. Mothers ensure the message is clearly and correctly understood. She listens for what isn’t said as well as the words she hears. Mothers intuitively ‘know’ what is needed and when. Just as she ‘knows’ when her senior VP is running out of ideas and arranges for an impromptu team brainstorming session.
Time Well-Managed. Mothers understand time. Where it comes from, where it goes, and how to use it wisely. Mothers are aware of the habits and attitudes that shape her use of time. They look for ways to effectively use time. They eliminate time drains. She knows when and how to delegate. Getting her daughter to the championship soccer game on time is just as important as knowing when to dump the nagging, whining client.
Positive Attitude. Mothers always have a way of making things better. They encourage us to be better. They see in us what it may take years for us to recognize. They provide learning experiences for us. Mothers share their passion for success. They understand the important role morale plays in moving the company’s profits up to the next level.
Devotion is a Necessity. Every mother knows that if you are not 100% devoted to your family, things will fall apart. She inspires people to do and be more than they thought possible. She is there with a sweeping hand to brush away the tear. Mothers also push you forward into the rush of life knowing you will fall but believing you will fly.
Mothers understand and accept that there will be times when something has to give. But they never lose sight of the goal or their vision. A mother infuses her children with high standards. They set challenging but attainable goals while motivating them to have faith in themselves. The wise mother provides a positive environment where her children will prosper beyond imagination. Just as the wise executive or business owner creates an environment where she and her team will thrive.
