Coworkers don’t take your advice. Every employee has a situation that requires a little problem solving from time to time and if it’s business related, they will likely ask their coworkers to see if they have any suggestions on how to handle it. If it seems that every time you make a suggestion, it’s never heeded, it’s fairly likely that you don’t have the kind of influence that it takes to offer up helpful information in your coworker’s mind.


Colleagues don’t come to you for help. What’s even worse than advice not heeded is advice not solicited, especially if it is within your field of expertise. If you hear about coworkers that have been trying to solve a problem that you could help with, yet they haven’t come to you, there is a good chance that your influence in that area isn’t as high as it should or could be.


Your work is not taken seriously. Your coworkers don’t necessarily joke about your work, but it is constantly passed by for other employees’ work that is of the same caliber as yours. What could be so different from your work than theirs? The answer doesn’t lie in their work – it lies in their influence level compared to yours. Perhaps it’s time to venture out of your comfort zone and try to become an influencer at your company.
