Dare to Negotiate a Successful Career, http://www.karen-keller.com
Are you on the bus to success and happiness in your career?

I’m sure you didn’t get to where you are in your career by playing it safe. You’ve had to take risks in order to get noticed and promoted. In fact, I would say that being willing to take risks is one of the keys to finding success.

But what do you do when you feel like your career has stalled even after you took all those risks?

What does any dare devil do once they’ve successfully jumped their motorcycle over 12 buses? Naturally, they add another bus or two and start all over again. When a dare devil achieves one risky move, they’re not satisfied.

They have to constantly up the ante – and so should you.

To negotiate a successful career you need a powerful set of underlying beliefs and convictions that influence the decisions you make throughout the negotiation process.

Believe it or not, you go through the negotiation process in your mind when it comes to breaking old patterns looking for a more satisfying successful career. Practice these five guidelines to better negotiate an ultra-successful career. Hint: It’s all in your mindset.

“On-Your-Feet” Flexibility. You need to bend with the winds of change. Be flexible in how you approach anyone who has influence over your career – including yourself.

Patience is a Virtue. Don’t rush or hurry the negotiation process. Hundreds – probably thousands – of negotiations have gone astray because people didn’t honor this virtue.

Resilient under Pressure. Look at every barrier or roadblock as an opportunity to add more to the negotiation. The more is your solution to the barrier. It will open new perspectives on how to sway opinion and decision (yours) in your favor.

Unattached to Outcomes. Attaching yourself to a specific outcome can be disastrous. You start to go down a tunnel as in ‘tunnel vision’ about what is the best career choice or decision.

Emotionally Proactive. Stay in control of your emotions. Think logically when you are confronted with change, discomfort or uncertainty. There will be time for emotions later.

Bonus Guideline: practice the following 3 beliefs that create the backbone for effective decision making. Ingraining them into you habitual thought patterns will give you a superior advantage as you progress through each negotiation.

  • “Everything is Negotiable”
  • “No Negotiation is Ever Final
  • “Preparation is the Key to Success”
